Description

Bloodstone is a semiprecious stone characterised by a dark green colour or olive green with the presence of red or brown spots or streaks. These are due to the presence of hematite or iron oxide in the stone, and give bloodstone its characteristic name. This stone consists mainly of microcrystalline quartz with traces of hematite, iron oxide and mineral impurities. Its hardness is 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, which makes it quite durable and suitable for decorative items. It finds mainly in India, but can also be found in Brazil, Australia and the USA. Bloodstone is often used for meditation because it is believed to promote concentration and mental clarity.
