Description

Black mother of pearl is a type of mother of pearl, characterised by various dark shades, ranging from grey to deep black. It is composed mainly of conchiolin and aragonite, two minerals that give to mother of pearl its characteristic iridescence and lustre.

The black mother of pearl with a "brick" structure differs from the one with a "random" structure, by the regular arrangement of the minerals inside the mother of pearl. This gives the black mother of pearl a clean, geometric look, with a flat, even surface that allows the light to reflect iridescently and evenly.

It is found in various parts of the world, for example in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Pacific and Indian Ocean. Black mother-of-pearl is a symbol of elegance and refinement, and is used in the manufacture of furniture, art objects and musical instruments.
