Description

Black Petrified Wood is a type of wood fossil that has undergone a similar mineralisation process as brown and black petrified wood, but it has a special feature: the deep black colour.

The deep black colour is due to a number of factors, including the high carbon content, the presence of minerals such as pyrite or hematite, and long-term exposure to atmospheric agents such as water and oxygen. Like other types of wood, black petrified wood retains the original structure and texture of the wood, but its organic compounds are replaced by minerals such as silica, limestone or hematite.

Because of this process, black petrified wood is a hard, resistant and valuable material.

This stone is quite rare, but it is found in many parts of the world, such as Arizona and Oregon in the US, Brazil, Madagascar and Indonesia.
